A very significant age related issue is loss of bone density and falls. According to the Center for Disease Control, at least 33% of Americans age 65 or older and 50% age 80 or older suffer at least one serious fall each year. Hip fractures have steadily increased. The cost, loss of independence and problems associated with rehabilitation are staggering when compared to the cost of prevention. In closely controlled studies, Tai chi has been proven to reduce the risk of falls by as much as 47%. Studies undertaken by Dr. Paul Lam in Australia have been published in the spring of 2005 document “Fall Prevention Newsletter”. The Arthritis Foundation has endorsed Dr. Lam’s Taichi for Arthritis Program and OHAA is certified to teach this course. Falls are the seventh leading cause of death in persons over age 65.
